i know this question has been bantered back and forth with no real definitive answer. What's good for one person may not be for another. Let me ask you this. Money is not problem however i don't need a Mercedes if a Chrysler will do the job. I am looking for a super fast notebook that i can read the forum's , get the lines fast, email and download things from time to time. Don't know how to do anything else. I get a notebook about every two years and am looking for something that i don't have to add memory every year. Some batterylife and holds up . You seem to help eyeryone with a problem and if it wasn't for you and Tinco and a few others ,questions would probably not get answered.I gatther you don't like Toshiba's or Dell's of which were my last two. Any help please.
New computer
In our paper this morning everyone is having a sale and Toshiba seems to lead the pack at every store with the more bang for the buck. I have had Toshiba's with no more problems than any other one. I don't understand why they don't last longer with me, as i'm not mishandling or using a lot of applications/ I have heard compliant's about all the one's that i have looked at. I guess it is kind of a catch 22 . The H'P's Compak and Toshiba's seem to be leading all the sales. Thanks for the info

whatever new computer you get at retail stores like best buy anc circuit city. take it home and reformat the entire system. you will have to spend the time reinstalling everything but it will be worth your time and will save you countless headaches in the long run. consider it a vital step in keeping it running smoothly.
New Notebook
Mr Dr. Pepper, i wish you and others would come in here more often and answer some of our foolish answer's. My computer knowledge wouldn't fill up a shot glass. Why would everything have to be reformated. Of coarse i couldn't do it and not even sure what it is, however i can get a freind of mine to do at a modest price. Thanks:smoker2:

I do come here every now and again. I would love to help people more in this area, I just don't get to scrolling that far down, that far often. 
After years, and months of heavy use your system registry and your startup menu, especially if you don't know how to adjust it, will become flooded with uninstalled information, and unnecessary programs using up resources like RAM. If you were to reformat it, get the XP cd, and backup all your files...reinstall it - step by step - you essentially are going back in time to the day the computer was first purchaed by you. I'm sure you can remember how fast it worked and how easy it was to get around on it.
Again, it does take time to do this, but the benefits are high. I reformat my system once every year or so. It's a great way to maybe keep some of those older systems with older hardware functional and useable. You don't need all these new RAM dimms (pieces) or larger hard drives. Just reformat it, clean it's clogged insides and start fresh.

Good advice... I use to own a 98 Gateway, formatted that POS like 9 times cause Windowswasher kept deleting the Himem file.
